Bill Bate was born in Liverpool in 1962. He studied at the Central School of Art & Design where he obtained his Fine Art degree. He has had exhibition with numerous galleries and at international art fairs including with Carina Haslam, Gagliardi Gallery, Hicks Gallery, Quantum Art, the Royal Society of British Artists and Royal Institute of Oil Painters to name a few. Bill has always been inspired by the human figure and the effect that light has on it. Throughout his career, Bill has used dance, boxing, and swimming as a way of portraying the body. It is the elements of power and energy that are the basis of his fascination with the human form. "I want people to feel this atmosphere when they see my work. I work with oils on canvas starting with a sketch in charcoal or conte crayon. I use life drawing for reference initially but employ all sources of information to reinforce the piece. The painting in and around the central image is my reaction to it and I try and convey some element of mood- a dark as well as a light side. With the use of light and shade upon the figure as well as a palette employing dark rich tones and opposing brighter colours, I hope to convey conflicting emotions for dramatic effect. I also study painters such as Klimt, Schiele, Caravaggio, Waterhouse and Bacon as well as more contemporary artists like Alex Kanevsky and Francois Bard, to name a few. From these influences and my own input, I hope to produce powerful and sensitive work that tries to reflect my thoughts and responses to the human condition."
