KV Duong (b. 1980 Ho Chi Minh City) is a London based painter and action artist. His work focuses on personal identity, war migration, sexuality and human relationships. He draws from personal experiences having grown up in Saigon and Toronto, and is now living in London, to explore the integration and conflict between his traditional Asian values and his Western liberal upbringing. His art making involves ripping and overlaying various historic images of the Vietnam war and photographs of the artist’s body painting performances, and then layering paint on top to build a new narrative while scraping back to reveal some of the works’ history. Topics of war migration and the Asian diaspora are examined through his family’s experiences of cultural assimilation in Canada as a minority immigrant family, and his own subset of integration growing up as a gay Asian male. Duong has been a part of numerous open competitions including Derwent Art Prize, Discerning Eye, Royal Cambrian Academy Open, Royal Ulster Academy of Arts Annual Exhibition and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition Programme.
