About the artwork'I found my inspiration from the song 'Advanced Animals' by Dou Wei (a famous Chinese rock singer). All of my titles are part of the lyrics. The lyrics of "Advanced Animals" show various gestures that reflect people's lives. One's life experience decides its character. Due to different psychological characteristics, they formed different social circles and working circles. Through this series, I hope to make the viewers reflect on their current environment and find the true colours of themselves'. Words quoted from Cao Ou.All the prints print on Chinese rice paper or Bark paper. The inks he used are mainly Chinese ink and watercolours, gouache. He has applied the traditional Chinese water-based printing method called 'Do Ban' as the primary technique.
Cao Ou was born in Shandong, China, in 1987. He developed his practice while attending the Printmaking Department of the China Academy of Fine Arts in 2007, and was awarded a BA degree in 2011. Following in from this Cao studies his MA degree in Printmaking graduating in 2015. Caoa now lives and works in Hangzhou. Inspired by artists Xu Bing and Chen Qi, Cao Ou has developed his skills in the techniques of woodcut printing. His artistic themes are inspired by landscapes and the repeating patterns of buildings. He was shortlisted for the First Muban Educational Trust Woodblock Printmaking Award in 2014.His work is currently held in the British Museumâ€™s permanent collection.
