About the artworkThe As If We Had Never Said Goodbye series is Melissa Teo's revisitation of the familiar, yet endearing Chinatown district and Tiong Bahru neighbourhood. Looking at Melissa's paintings, it is easy to understand why she has a soft spot for things vintage. Her graphic design background also shows through in her work. The pieces are mainly rendered with a thoughtful balance of black and white spaces and infused with the playful use of lines. Intermittent splashes of colour that evoke copper rust and lapis lazuli add interest to the otherwise predominantly black and white compositions. The paintings remind one of old newsprints from a bygone era. The nostalgic scenes are a mishmash of impressions and glimpses of well-loved territories, like how one might normally see flashes of people and places in one's mind in a state of recall. A mysteriously quiet aura seems to loom over the scenes, yet Melissa manages to create a quaint, old world charm through her unorthodox interpretations.
