About the artworkChinatown Food Street, before the Covid-19 pandemic cleared the crowds from the streets.Located on Smith Street in the heart of Chinatown, Chinatown Food Street celebrates the assembly of several speciality hawker dishes from the main Chinese dialects and different races in Singapore, all under a newly constructed high-ceiling glass canopy shelter.
Tay Zhiyong is an art teacher and watercolourist. He was an apprentice of Singapore artist Leo Hee Tong and graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Masters in Architecture. He went on to work as an architectural associate at an architectural firm for one-and-a-half years before making a career switch to teaching art at secondary school.
As an art teacher, Zhiyong believes in leading students by example in creating a portfolio of watercolour works during his free time. His work was featured in an exhibition of art works by MOE art teachers in 2016, and later in the Urban Sketchersâ€™ publication I Love Geylang Serai. He was later admitted into the Singapore Watercolour Society and exhibited at the 47th Singapore Watercolour Society Annual Exhibition 2016. Recently, Zhiyong was selected as one of the finalists for the Angelico Art Award 2018.
