British artist Chris Mitton lives and works in Sussex, UK. Chris left his career as a Mac designer to work as an assistant to the sculptor Giles Penny and later joined the stone-carving studio of Andrea Schulewitz. He now works independently, carving at his West Sussex studio.
Through his use of classical fine art methods and materials such as Carrara marble while referencing contemporary, ubiquitous and throwaway objects, Mitton establishes a point of tension in his work and in so doing raises universal questions surrounding the subjective nature of value, both aesthetically and conceptually. His works give new meaning to the disposable mass-produced object referenced as it becomes invested with time and the skill of the hand of the artist.
Chris's work has been exhibited widely around the UK since 2000 at institutions, galleries and fairs. Recent highlights include; 'Breaking Boundaries', TAG Fine Arts, EDGE Projects, Herald Street, London (solo show) (2016), 'The Coca-Cola Bottle Art Tour: Inspiring Pop Culture for 100 Years', Technology Museum, Stockholm, Sweden (then touring) (2015) and 'Multiplied', TAG Fine Arts, Christie’s, London , 2015. Chris has also been selected on a regular basis for both AAF London fairs in Battersea and Hampstead.
