About Jonathan Hateley

Jonathan Hateley is a spectacular sculptor who was born in the West Midlands. Having created props for the musical “The Phantom of the Opera” and the English National Opera, Jonathan spent many years sculpting for models and effects in TV and film and illustrating children’s’ books.

In 2003, he began creating his own work, thus turning his passion into a career. One of his earliest public commissions was undertaken for Kent County Council, creating three sculptures for new schools. His sculptures are now regularly shown and sold in the UK and around the world, most recently in New York and Hong Kong.

All aspects of the natural world inspire Jonathan. Working in clay, he enjoys the challenge of creating from both the real and imagined. Through close observation and manipulation of materials, Jonathan creates detail and texture or surface relief on his sculptures, which are all hand finished and painted to accentuate the relief. Most of his pieces are suitable for indoor and outdoor installation.

Jonathan lives and works from his studio in Kent. He is currently working on a series of stylised human figures, employing his own uniquely interpretative style to create an inspiring body of work. He made his debut with the Linda Blackstone Gallery at LAPADA Berkeley Square, September 2017. His work was greatly admired on the first showing and has attracted patrons in Manchester and London at subsequent exhibitions.
